It’s done! It took 4 weeks from start to finish and our kitchen transformation is complete! I had no idea my old kitchen was that ugly until I put these two pictures together… mind blowing.
Whoever invented microwaves raised over the oven was a genius. It’s life changing.
It’s really tough to pick a favorite part of the new kitchen, but this may be my favorite:
I can finally wash pots and pans with ease! And a leaky faucet doesn’t keep me up at night.
It’s all just too exciting!
What We Did:
- We used Rust-Oleum to paint the cabinets ourselves. We watched their video, bought the “espresso” kit at Home Depot, and started painting.
- We updated the cabinet hardware.
- We bought the new appliances on major sale during Memorial Day weekend.
- We painted the walls a light grey: Benjamin Moore’s Wish
- We had professionals install the granite, which is called Kashmir White. (For those in the DC area, Artistic Granite did the install for us. They were really great. Extremely helpful, quick turnaround, and did wonderful work, I highly recommend).
- Artistic Granite also installed our beveled subway tile back splash and the faucet/sink.
Now it’s time to do a lot of cooking!

Wow, it looks incredible! My husband is doing our kitchen himself, so progress is VERY slow. They cabinets look brand new!
thank you! yeah this was our first project so we needed help, there’s no way we could have done it ourselves. but i am glad to have only had a short time living in a construction zone!
Yay — it looks awesome! I love your sink, too, and it’s hard to believe those are the same cabinets. Outstanding job! Now you have to have a big ol’ party to celebrate!
thank you! yes that’s the plan
That looks awesome! Having a kitchen you love definitely makes life a happier place and makes you actually want to keep it clean
oh i am totally all about cleaning it! i’m sure it won’t last forever, but I like it looking just like the picture at all times. haha but it totally deserves some serious lovin’ that includes butter, frosting, batter, etc splattered everywhere at least for a little while
Love the new look! The cabinets look great.
thanks Rose!
This looks amazing Mila! Love the finishes and how cohesive the look is. Well done! And in 4 weeks — wow!
thank you, Shanna!
Gorgeous! Love the dark cabinets with the stainless steel appliances – striking! And nothing better than a brand-new kitchen sink that’s nice and deep too. Good for you guys!
yeah i never thought a sink would make me this happy, lol!
WOW that remodel looks incredible!! Love the dark cabinets!!
thank you!
WOW WOW WOW! This is such a drastic difference and looks amazing! Can’t believe you did the cabinets yourself. They look so good!
How exciting! Love that new sink- is it one that you can just press and it turns on? I want one of those : )
I cant wait to live in a spcae that is bigger than a pizza box
Gotta love NYC
I love, love, love your new kitchen… and your new little sink. TOO CUTE!
thank you!! it’s actually a huge sink, double (if not triple) the size of the original one, i just didn’t zoom in as much in the picture so it kinda does look smaller.
I love the look of your new kitchen – so modern! The contrast with the light granite and dark wood is beautiful!
thank you so much!!! i love it too
I’m just now reading this post and I must say WOW!! It looks AMAZING!! Very inspiring! My hubby wants to redo our kitchen but we are cluess as to where to start. Thanks for the recommendation, we are in the DC and it helps to know a company that is reliable for expensive purchases!
Thanks so much! If you are local than I HIGHLY recommend them, it’s just two brothers so it’s easy to negotiate with them. And they did great work!
Love the look with the dark cabinets! What sort of material did you use for the backsplash?
Chrystal,
The backsplash is beleved subway tile. Similar to that in the link below. You can buy it for ~$4-$7 a square foot.

hey we are looking at a house and dont have the money to redo the kitchen. it is in dire need of a makeover. everything is old and yucky. anyway this post makes it look so doable to paint the cabinets and make the kitchen look more up to date. i just saw this on pinterest. have you done a job like this before? I have never tried painting or anything crafty. how long did it take to do the cabinets minus the granite and installing appliances?
Rachel – We did the cabinets in 4 steps.
Step 1: Take off the cabinet doors, clean doors, and clean the left over frame of the cabinets. This took around 8 hours total with both of us doing it.
Step 2: Paint the cabinet doors. You have to paint both sides with 2 coats, and then a final coat of gloss. This took around 16 hours total with both of us working.
Step 3: Paint the cabinet frames. Do the same process as painting the cabinet doors. This only took a couple of hours per coat.
Step 4: Put the doors back on the frame. Depending on how many doors you have it will vary, but this only took a couple of hours.
Basically we did all of the cabinets over the weekend. It was pretty painful, but they look great and it was pretty easy to do.
Below is a link to the website of the product we used. It walks you through the process. Also, there are a bunch of links on Youtube that are helpful.
